For EarthChoice products, doing things the right way is a core focus, an embedded corporate value that touches every phase of our operations. Environmental responsibility goes beyond marketing claims of using post-consumer waste or declaring one material more environmentally friendly than another. From purchasing raw materials to delivering finished products, we consider the environmental impact of our products and processes. In doing so, we work with a number of different partners and organizations:
Our compostable products are designed to meet the appropriate standards related to compostability, including D6400 for compostable plastics and D6868 for paper coated with compostable plastics.
Association of Plastic Recyclers (www.plasticsrecycling.org)
Pactiv is a member of APR and proud to support its Demand Champions campaign to drive increased use of recycled content in plastics.
Biodegradable Products Institute (www.bpiworld.org)
Once our compostable products meet ASTM standards, we submit them to the Biodegradable Products Institute, a third-party certifier in the U.S. Pactiv is a member of the non-profit group.
BioPreferred Program (www.biopreferred.gov)
A number of our products have been certified as having biobased content and are part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s BioPreferred Program.
Compost Manufacturing Alliance (www.compostmanufacturingalliance.com)
Some of our compostable products have been run through the Compost Manufacturing Alliance’s field tests to show compostability in real-word scenarios. Most notably, various products are accepted by Cedar Grove, a well-known industrial composter in Washington state.
Foodservice Packaging Institute (www.fpi.org)
Pactiv is a long-time member of the industry’s trade association in North America. Pactiv is also a founding member of FPI’s various groups working to increase the recycling and/or composting of paper and plastic foodservice packaging. More details on those efforts may be found at www.fpi.org/recovery.
U.S. Composting Council (www.compostingcouncil.org)
Pactiv is a member of the compost industry’s association to support their efforts to grow the U.S. infrastructure to process compostable packaging.
