Amidst all of the legislative activity aimed at single use foodservice packaging, there are finally some credible sources that are starting to help shape the dialog so that implemented sustainability solutions will actually solve the problems at hand. These problems relate primarily to reduced greenhouse gas generation, solid waste reduction, and marine debris/litter prevention & remediation.

Innovation is certainly occurring! The American Plastics Council is floating unique a way to fund additional recycling collection and processing. Material suppliers are working to develop and promote chemical recycling. And, reasonable voices are starting to question the move away from plastics.

There’s one additional thing that’s needed. More involvement on the part of all of us.

There’s an old parable called The Tragedy of the Commons. It used to be that maintaining the town square (or Commons) was the responsibility of the town’s inhabitants. Because everyone thought that everyone else would pitch in, very few individuals actually became involved, leading to the deterioration of one of a community’s most valuable assets: its primary gathering place.

Unless we all start to promote the value of our products, packaging, and services, other voices will take control of the sustainability dialog and rebuild the vision in ways that cannot always be predicted and will not always benefit society or ourselves. And that would be a tragedy.
